Race Awards

Great food and great company, as always with the SYC racing crowd.  Congrats to Stephen Ashley and Risa Scott, who's tireless devotion to the club as Race Chair and New Membership Chair are the winners of this years "Frank and Dee Ross Trophy".  They've given so much to the club they truly deserved the award!

Have you signed up for the Turkey Trot yet?

Come out and race in the last PHRF event of the year for Shoreline Yacht Club.  Although weather prediction is far from an exact science, it looks like we are going to miss the worst of the weather during the race.  Taking a number of weather sites into account, it looks like the worst of the rain and wind will have blown through before the start of the race and the winds will be good for the afternoon.  Not to say that you might not get another sprinkle or two during the race, but then sailors are not afraid of getting wet.

As of this writing we have 5 boats registered in the PHRF class and only one in the Non-spin class.  Cutoff for registrations is 09:00 tomorrow (Saturday, November 12th) morning.

See you on the water

CAM Series Race #6 Results

We thought it was going to be a wet and wild ride, and we ended up having light shifty air and blue skies for most of the race.  We had two brave sailors from the meetup join us and they were probably a little let down when the wind died off.  Here's a shot of Whirligig, catching a puff towards the finish.  (Photo Courtesy of Lisa Anderson)

Sympathy Condolences for the Richards Family

A note from our Commodore...
By now everyone has heard about the senseless shooting in Seal Beach. I sat at home and watched the news, and was horrified about the tragic crime and how many lives would be impacted by this event.

I had lived in Seal Beach when I first moved to California from Kentucky, but I didn't have any real ties to anyone there. Or so I thought.

Our good friends and wonderful members Cliff and Gayle Richards lost one of their daughter's, Christy Wilson, in the shooting.

My heart goes out to Cliff and Gayle, and to the Wilson Family. There are no words or actions that will make the hurt go away anytime soon. The Richards have been a big part of the Shoreline Yacht Club family for many years, and please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Jack Daniel Smith, Commodore

There and Back Avalon Regatta

This past weekend Shoreline Yacht Club hosted the "There and Back Avalon Regatta".  The regatta is a two race series, featuring a race from Long Beach to Avalon on Saturday, February 5th and then a pursuit race from Avalon back to Long Beach on Sunday, February 6th.

Many thanks to the following skippers for their participation:

Paul Margis - Indigo
Chuck Waltman - Silver Fox
Ray Wilson - King's Gambit
Risa Scott/Stephen Ashley - Mille Onde
Rod Goodman - Top Cat
George Merino - Odyssey
Jason Cavallaro - Veloce
Bruce Davis - Blue Goose
Larry Palmer - Platform 9 3/4
Don McCarthy - Rubicon

In a stark contrast to last year when we had strong winds, Saturday's race was run in light winds.  In fact so light that none of the boats finished within the prescribed time limit although at least two fought to the very end to try and get over the line in time.  After a good dinner at Antonio's in Avalon all of the competitors retired to dream of better winds for Sunday's race.

The start of Sunday's race which featured a pursuit start featured good winds in the 10-12 knot range and had all of the competitors thinking that maybe we had a good day of sailing ahead of us.  It was not to be.  After about an hour, the winds dropped to almost nothing and we were even radioed from someone in the hills above Avalon that they could see flat water all the way to Long Beach.  Most of the competitors finally gave up and fired up the engines to hopefully catch part of the Super Bowl back at the Club.  As a final tease from the wind gods, we did get a nice burst of wind about an hour out of Long Beach with gusts hitting 15 knots - too little too late for most of the fleet.

Congratulations to Paul Margis and his crew on "Indigo" for not only sticking it out but winning the race and taking the overall win for the Regatta.  Additional congratulations to Chuck Waltman of "Silver Fox" for single-handing his boat and being the other finisher.

Lastly, I want to thank Ray Wilson for his contribution as the PRO as well as competing on his own boat.  His attention to detail and overall coordination made the event come off great for all concerned.

Next Shoreline event - Rites of Spring, Saturday, March 12th.  NOR, SI's and Entry Forms will be available on the website www.shorelineyachtclub.com in the next few days.
