Charity Regatta Cruising Class

The 27th annual Yacht Clubs of Long Beach Charity Regatta benefiting The Children's Clinic of Long Beach is September 22, 2013.

Shoreline Yacht Club is hosting the cruising class.  We are looking for boats that don't normally race to come out and have a little fun and 100% of the proceeds go to a good cause.  We've got an easy course laid out, and some big cruising boats that have already signed up to race!  If you know anybody who hasn't gotten their boat out of the slip in a while, this is a great opportunity for them! You don't have to be a member of a yacht club or have a PHRF certificate to participate!   All the racing docs are online, including electronic entry and a crew wanted/crew needed list signup sheet.  Check it out on the PHRF tab.

Cal 20 Fever

This past weekend saw Cal 20 Fever hit Shoreline Yacht Club in a big way.  Two fleets raced: Fleet A competed in three races Saturday dominated by heavy fog and the competitors trying to find the marks and the finish line and Fleet B on Sunday dominated by heavier wind.

Congratulations to the Fleet Winners:

Fleet A (Saturday )- Mike Schachter
Fleet B (Sunday) - Warren Wolfe

Complete results will be posted under the Cal 20 Fleet tab as soon as possible.

Long Beach to Dana Point

On Saturday, August 31st, SYC will host the 30th annual Long Beach to Dana Point Race in conjunction with our partners Dana Point Yacht Club and Dana West Yacht Club.  For the past several years we have had 50 – 70 boats participate in one of the fleets as they race down the coast (hopefully keeping it to port) to Dana Point and the hospitality of DPYC and DWYC.

Come out Friday night and visit with the sailors that have brought their boats into Shoreline from other areas for the race.  On Saturday morning, Joanie Asher and her tireless crew of volunteers have a great send-off breakfast planned for the racers and anyone else that wants to come out and enjoy the food.

Dana West Yacht Club has a great after race party planned for Saturday night.  The awards presentation will be at Dana Point Yacht Club on Sunday at noon.  Come out and have a Bloody Mary to start the day and stay for the awards.

My thanks to the many volunteers that it takes to make an event like this work – as always, SYC, DPYC and DWYC members step up when needed!

Cal 20 - Taco Tuesdays Race One

The first race of 2013 in the Cal 20 - Taco Tuesdays series is in the books.  As a fitting kick-off the competitors faced 12+ knot winds at the start which held most of the race.

Congratulations to Mike Schachter on Kate for taking the win with his crew of Richard Larson and Brett Allred.

The rest of the fleet followed as shown below:

Jason Hite on Brit Bratt with Risa Scott
Dave Zoratti on Bette Boop with Debbie Kraemer and Owen Provence
Jason Cavallaro on RisQue with Lesley MacDonald
Ethan Reed on Salty Lady with Judy Fusco and George Merino
Dan Paracchini on Lou Lou with Vicki Hite and Bob Moberg

A big thank you to Kathy Landers for her creativity in the production of the awards.  As always she produced an unusual and interesting design that any sailor would love to have in their trophy case!

Lastly thanks to John Sears for joining me on Race Committee.  Racing is about the sailors that get out and pound around the course but without the RC that functions in the background, it wouldn't be possible.

Border Run

Rites of Spring

There and Back Avalon Regatta Participants

Thanks to all that participated in the 2013 There and Back Avalon Regatta this past weekend.  On Saturday we all had to endure a painfully slow start and finish but the run across in 10-12 knots of wind made up for all of the foundering around!

The dinner and awards at Antonio's Pizzeria was fun, the beer was cold and the food was good.  Maybe next year they can get our reservations right???

The race home on Sunday was again started under light conditions which continued well into the afternoon.  For the three boats that continued to race the winds finally filled in around 16:00 or so and they had a real race to Queen's Gate.  Mille Onde carried the lead until the last mile or so when Indigo, who had just recently passed Puddle Jumper, came sliding by and to the victory.  For those who disparage the PHRF ratings, for three boats so dissimilar to have finished a race from Avalon to Long Beach within 15 minutes of each other speaks volumes.

Congratulations to the following winners:
Outbound Race - Puddle Jumper - Spin and Willow Wind - Non-spin
Inbound Race - Indigo - Spin
Overall Series - Puddle Jumper - Spin and Willow Wind - Non-spin

All of the results are posted under the Club Race tab.
